Solana Company's $30M Loss: The Accounting Mirage Behind the Bleeding

Phan Hòa Đặc sắc

Hook

A Nasdaq-listed company that holds 83.7% of its assets in one crypto asset just reported a $30.3 million quarterly loss. Solana Company (HSDT) posted a net loss of $30.3 million for Q2 2025, yet its revenue from staking operations was only $2.5 million. The market reaction? A modest 5.56% drop in stock price. The real story isn't the loss—it's the structural fragility that the loss reveals.

Context

HSDT is a hybrid entity: a Solana validator and a digital asset treasury company. It generates income by running validator nodes on Solana, earning staking rewards in SOL. Its balance sheet is overwhelmingly composed of SOL tokens—$147.3 million worth, or 83.7% of total assets. The rest: $3.6 million in cash and $23.9 million in other assets. Total liabilities: only $6.4 million. On the surface, it looks like a low-debt, clean business. But the cash buffer is dangerously thin—just 2% of assets. In a market where SOL dropped 62% over the past year, that cash cushion is a ticking clock.

Dòng vốn không bao giờ ngủ – nó chỉ tái cấu trúc. The capital that once flowed into SOL treasury plays is now restructuring toward more resilient structures. HSDT is a case study in how not to structure a crypto treasury.

Core

Let's dissect the numbers. HSDT's staking revenue in Q2 was $2.5 million, derived from 31,200 SOL in staking rewards. At an estimated 8.8% yield on staked SOL, that implies roughly 142,000 SOL staked—a modest position in the validator set, well below the top 10. The gross margin on this staking revenue was 97%. That's typical for validator operations: the main cost is human capital and server maintenance, not software licensing. But the problem is scale. The staking income is a tiny fraction of the asset base—annualized staking yield of ~6.4% on the SOL holdings, but the price decline of SOL wiped out that yield nearly 7 times over.

The accounting treatment exacerbates the pain. Under US GAAP, crypto assets are treated as indefinite-lived intangible assets. When the price drops, you must take an impairment charge. And crucially, you cannot reverse that impairment if the price recovers—unless you sell and repurchase. This means the $30.3 million loss is partly a phantom: it reflects the unrealized price decline of SOL, but not the ability of the company to generate ongoing staking revenue. If SOL rallies 50%, the book value won't improve until the company realizes gains through a sale. This is the accounting mirage.

But the cash position is no mirage. With only $3.6 million in cash, HSDT has limited runway. The Q2 operating expenses, inferred from the $2.5 million revenue and 97% margin, suggest cash burn of perhaps $1-2 million per quarter (including the $2.3 million share buyback). That gives the company 2-3 quarters of liquidity before it needs to raise more capital. The recent $7.9 million direct offering from Mirae Asset and HashKey Capital provides a lifeline, but it also dilutes existing shareholders. The share buyback of $2.3 million—conducted while simultaneously raising capital—is contradictory. One interpretation: management is trying to prop up the stock price above the $1.00 Nasdaq minimum threshold. At $1.70, HSDT is dangerously close to a delisting warning.

Contrarian

Here's the angle most media misses: the P/B ratio of 0.59x implies the market is pricing in a 41% discount to net asset value. That's a significant pessimism premium. If SOL stabilizes or appreciates, HSDT stock could re-rate dramatically. The participation of Mirae Asset—a major Korean asset manager—in the direct offering signals that institutional capital sees value in SOL exposure through a regulated vehicle. Pantera Capital's view that capital is flowing to "compliant, reporting companies" supports this thesis. HSDT's listed status is its moat, not its technology.

But the contrarian bet has a razor edge. The 62% annual decline in SOL and the "weeks-long warning signals" on-chain suggest that Solana's ecosystem is under pressure from attention-draining competitors like Hyperliquid, where one protocol generated $31 million in profit in a single quarter. If Solana's DeFi and DePIN narratives fail to regain traction, HSDT's validator business will shrink alongside its asset base. The company is effectively a 1x leveraged SOL play with a small staking yield as a buffer. That buffer is too thin to absorb a sustained downturn.

Let me draw from my own playbook. In 2022, when Luna collapsed, I saw the same pattern: companies with concentrated crypto treasuries and thin cash buffers were the first to break. I personally pulled $2 million in liquidity from stablecoin pools to avoid a $5 million loss. Then I bought 10 BTC at $20,000 with $200,000 of my own capital. That move paid off 160% by 2024. The lesson: in a bear market, liquidity is king. HSDT has the opposite—illiquid SOL assets and almost no cash. It's a ticking time bomb unless SOL price recovers quickly.

Takeaway

HSDT's Q2 loss is a symptom, not the disease. The disease is structural: a business model that relies entirely on a single volatile asset for both revenue and asset value, with insufficient cash reserves. The stock is a leveraged bet on SOL's recovery, priced at a 40% discount. If you believe Solana's ecosystem will revive—driven by Firedancer upgrades, DePIN adoption, or AI agent narratives—then HSDT could be a deep value play. But if you're risk-averse, the cash burn rate and delisting risk are real. Dòng vốn không bao giờ ngủ – it just restructures. Right now, it's restructuring away from HSDT.

The question is not whether HSDT can survive. The question is: will SOL price recover before the cash runs out?
